Biographie

Peintre, collagiste, illustrateur et lithographe français, né à Rouen et mort à Paris.

Il commence très tôt la peinture, influencé par l’École de Rouen, dans un style proche de Joseph Delattre, peignant ports et paysages normands. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il se réfugie en Auvergne, où sa palette s’assombrit et sa peinture se simplifie. En 1958, après une exposition à Paris, il abandonne la figuration pour évoluer vers l’abstraction, dans une orientation proche de Nicolas de Staël.

Installé dès 1968 dans son atelier de la rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs à Paris, il collabore avec le sculpteur Slobodan Jevtic et remporte le Prix des Volcans en 1967. Son travail inspire de nombreux poètes (Guillevic, Cortázar, Caillois…), donnant lieu en 1978 au livre Bernard Mandeville illustré par quarante-deux poètes.

Dans les années 1970–1980, son œuvre évolue vers une abstraction plus lumineuse et structurée, où s’équilibrent rigueur géométrique, matières minérales et formes épurées.

Il est inhumé au cimetière du Montparnasse à Paris.

French painter, collage artist, illustrator, and lithographer, born in Rouen and died in Paris.

He began painting at a very young age, influenced by the Rouen School, in a style similar to Joseph Delattre, painting Norman harbors and landscapes. During the Second World War, he took refuge in the Auvergne region, where his palette darkened and his painting became simpler. In 1958, after an exhibition in Paris, he abandoned figurative art and moved towards abstraction, in a style close to that of Nicolas de Staël.

Established in his studio on rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs in Paris in 1968, he collaborated with the sculptor Slobodan Jevtic and won the Prix des Volcans in 1967. His work inspired numerous poets (Guillevic, Cortázar, Caillois, etc.), resulting in the 1978 book Bernard Mandeville, illustrated by forty-two poets.

In the 1970s and 1980s, his work evolved towards a more luminous and structured abstraction, where geometric rigor, mineral materials, and refined forms are balanced.

He is buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris.
